50th Anniversary

1975 - 2025

Established in 1975 as the first interpretative centre in Ireland, the, then Burren Interpretative Centre pioneered a new approach to connecting visitors with Ireland’s natural landscapes, becoming a model for similar institutions across the country.

For five decades, it has been a vital destination for visitors from around the world, offering a unique window into the geology, ecology, and history of the stunning Burren region, famed for its breathtaking limestone pavements, rich archaeological sites, and vibrant biodiversity.

Since its founding, The Burren Visitor Centre has remained dedicated to helping visitors connect with this remarkable region through immersive exhibits, guided tours, and educational resources that celebrate the area’s natural beauty and cultural legacy.

Honouring a Legacy of Pioneering Conservation and Education

From its earliest days, The Burren Visitor Centre set new standards in how Ireland’s natural heritage could be showcased and preserved. Its innovative approach inspired the development of interpretative centres across the country, marking it as a true pioneer in sustainable tourism and heritage education. The Centre has grown from a modest one-room initiative to a comprehensive visitor experience, now including interactive displays, audio-visual presentations, and digital resources that bring the story of the Burren to a global audience.

Throughout 2025, The Burren Visitor Centre will collaborate with local businesses, artists, historians, and environmentalists in a program of year-long celebrations. Highlights include a retrospective exhibition tracing the Centre's pioneering journey, guided heritage walks through Kilfenora and the Burren landscape, and talks and workshops focused on community, history and environmental stewardship.

As part of this milestone, by the end of the year, the Centre will also unveil a digital archive of historic photographs, interviews, and documents, preserving the legacy of both the Burren Visitor Centre and the Burren region for generations to come.

A Year of Celebrating Culture and Community

To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the Centre will host a series of events throughout 2025, including special exhibitions, expert talks, workshops, and a commemorative gathering honouring the visionaries who launched Ireland’s first interpretative centre half a century ago.

These events will not only celebrate the Centre’s legacy but also highlight the ongoing work it does for The Burren Community. In the spirit of the sentiment in which The Burren Visitor Centre was established, all events are complementary, although tickets should be booked below.

Donations to the 50th Anniversary Playground Project are greatly appreciated.

The 50th Anniversary Community Park Project

This year, as part of its 50th Anniversary Celebrations, The Burren Visitor Centre is fundraising to purchase and develop a strip of land in the heart of Kilfenora adjacent to the Centre and turn it into a Community Garden and Playground.
